Practically every homeowner has a new fence built at some point, but many people still have questions about how to get started. Especially since building a new fence typically involves coordinating with neighbors and getting them to agree to the project.

At Discount Fence USA, we know that approaching your neighbors about getting involved (especially financially) can be a pretty daunting task. So we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions that arise in the initial project planning.

Should I discuss my new fence with my neighbor before I begin?

Seems like an obvious answer, but if you’re building the fence completely on your property then there’s technically no reason you have to ask your neighbor’s permission. However, to keep things friendly and potentially divide up the costs, it’s still a really good idea to talk to them first. We can always help you discuss a new fence with your neighbor and will make sure you have all the information to explain the project to them.

Unfortunately, most people have three or four neighbors. So it’s not always as easy as just talking to one other person. The good news, though, is that it means less cost for each person involved. And don’t worry. We’ve talked to hundreds of neighbors and have seen every type of reaction. No matter their ultimate response as to whether or not they want to go along with the project, we can tell you that the vast majority of people are very easy to deal with.

Who gets the “good” side of the fence?

The good or bad side of the fence depends on the person. Normally, the “good side” is referring to the side with only planks showing. The other side has the rails and posts that the planks are attached to. Some people want the plank-only side facing in and some want it facing out. It all depends on the person. If the neighbor doesn’t care you can take the good side.

Who pays for the new fence?

This, of course, is the main question on everyone’s mind when you start discussing a new fence. Some people don’t care about having a new fence and don’t mind if you build one, but aren’t going to pay for any of it. Some people are sticker-shocked by the price of a new fence, but realize they’re going to need a new one eventually anyway and this is a good opportunity to split the costs. So in the end, most neighbors split it 50/50 and end up getting a good deal for all involved.

However, when it comes down to it, the person who signs the contract with the fence company is ultimately responsible for getting the fence paid for. Rarely will a fence company ever write more than one contract. The person working with the fence company is also responsible for paying the deposit. Again, most people want to be good neighbors and stick to their word so getting the payments is usually never a problem.
